Colour

Avoid mostly white or green berries, as they are likely underripe. Choose vibrant red strawberries, and the darker ones tend to be sweeter.

Smell

Ripe strawberries should have a sweet and fragrant aroma. If not, they may not be fully ripened.

Glossiness

Ripe strawberries often have a natural shine or gloss on their surface. This indicates freshness and maturity.

Two quick and easy Strawberry recipes

Recipe 1: Strawberry Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yoghurt
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional, depending on sweetness preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes (optional, for a colder smoothie)

Directions:

  • Place the strawberries, sliced banana, Greek yoghurt, milk, honey (if using), and vanilla extract into a blender.
  • Blend the ingredients on high speed until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick, you can add more milk to achieve your desired consistency.
  •  Taste the smoothie and adjust the sweetness if needed. If it’s too tart, add a little more honey or sweetener of your choice.
  • If you prefer a colder smoothie, you can add a handful of ice cubes to the blender and blend until the ice is crushed and the smoothie is chilled.
  • Pour the strawberry smoothie into glasses and serve immediately. Garnish with a fresh strawberry on the rim or a slice of banana if desired.

Recipe 2: Strawberry Oatmeal

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1.5 cups of oats
  • 1 cup of  vanilla yoghurt
  • 1 spoon of honey
  • 2 spoons of chia seeds
  • A pinch of salt

Directions:

  • Prepare strawberry milk by placing chopped strawberries into a blender, along with milk and water. Blend the ingredients until the mixture achieves a smooth consistency.
  • Prepare the oatmeal by boiling strawberry milk in a small saucepan. Then, reduce the heat to a simmer and add the oats and honey.
  • Stir occasionally and allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes until the oats reach an evenly cooked texture.
  • Transfer the strawberry oats to a bowl, and then gently stir in the yoghurt, along with the chia seeds.
  • Feel free to enhance your dish with the toppings of your choice (dry fruits), and add a pinch of salt to taste.
